| Duiken en snorkelen in Zuid Afrika Zuid-Afrika biedt spectaculaire plaatsen om te duiken. Aan de kust van KwaZulu natal in Sondwana Bay kunnen duikers de meest zuidelijke koraalriffen ter wereld bekijken. Ook kun je er “Old Four Legs” aantreffen tijdens duiktochten op het rif. Dit 360 miljoen jaar oude zogenaamde levende fossiel heeft de naam Coelacanth. Men dacht dat deze vis uitgestorven was maar in 2000 hebben duikers een hele kolonie aantgetroffen. Verder naar het zuiden, in de buurt van Umkomaas en Margate, leven in de rotsachtige riffen vele soorten tropische vissen. Van hieruit kunnen duikers ook een fascinerend aantal haaien waarnemen. De migrerende zandhaai (Carcharius taurus) paart hier aan het einde van de winter (het Europese einde van de zomer) en het begin van de lente. Ze kunnen worden waargenomen bij Aliwal Shaol of Protea Banks, buiten het rif, waar je ook Zambezi’s (de grondhaai), tijgerhaaien, hamerhaaien en witte haaien kunt tegenkomen. Eenmaal ter hoogte van de Zuidkaap daalt de temperatuur van het water aanzienlijk. Het is ter hoogte van Kaap Agulhas bent heb je de plek waar de Indische Oceaan en de Atlantische Oceaan samenstromen waar er eveneens een enorme verscheidenheid is aan zeedieren. In de buurt van Kaapstad heb je ook de enorm uitgestrekte kelpbossen. Vanwege deze fantastische duikmogelijkheden heeft Zuid-Afrika een goede infrastructuur van duikoperators, -resorts en –scholen; kortom een ideale plaats om te leren duiken. Buiten een zeer unieke fauna en flora onderwereld is er ook mogelijkheid om te duiken op oude interessante scheepswrakken, in het bijzonder in de omgeving van Kaapstad, Port-Elizabeth en Durban. Je kan dan ook prima duiken in Zuid Afrika. Voor de kust van de provincie KwaZulu-Natal, met name in het noorden, heb je uitstekende mogelijkheden om een grote verscheidenheid aan vissen te zien. Denk hierbij aan haaien, dolfijnen, walvishaaien, roggen en zeeschildpadden. Je kan hier van 10 tot 30 meter diep duiken. Sodwana Bay is een goede uitvalsbasis voor de mooiste duiktrips van Zuid Afrika. Voor de ervaren duiker zijn de Protea Banks, een kkleine 200 kilometer zuidelijk van Durban een echte uitdaging. Je vind hier heel veel verschillende soorten haaien. Het water is echter zeer ruig en het weer kan hier snel omslaan. Protea Banks zijn echter een echte aanrader voor de duikroutinier. De lagune van Knysna is voor de beeginnende duiker een echte aanrader. Het gebied rond Sodwana Bay, in het noorden van de provincie KwaZulu-Natal biedt geweldige mogelijkheden voor snorkelen. Scuba Dive Bell Buoy Reef For certified scuba divers, there are a wide range of dive spots around Port Elizabeth. Try Bell Buoy; a large reef which covers almost 5 acres with depths which range from 2 - 20 meters. Large red bait pods are found in the shallower regions, with overhangs, pinnacles and arches. Masses of sponges, sea squirts, sea fans, soft and hard coral with colorful soft coral, gullies and a rocky bottom with pinnacles and drop-offs. Large, lush gorgonians, a resident conger eel and tame fish and plentiful red bait make this dive special. Ideal conditions prevail with visibility of 8-15m in the Bay from May to September and 8-15m on the Wild side from October to April.
