South African Airways wijnlijst en winnaars 2009

Wednesday, November 12

After a rigorous tasting process by some of South Africa's and world's most respected wine experts earlier this year, SAA finally has its choice of wines to fly with in 2009.
The purely South African produce will be offered on board all SAA's domestic, regional and international flights in Premium and Economy Class and in our Lounges.

"It is a privilege for SAA to carry the chosen wines on board our flights. We trust that customers will enjoy them and that our international guests will talk about them in their countries and be encouraged to take some of our local vintages home with them," says Nomvula Nkabinde, SAA General Manager Global Sales and Marketing.

Approximately 80 different wines will be available to customers across SAA's flights after over more than 900 wines were entered in to the selection process.

Apart from the chosen wines, SAA awarded the following local estates and their wine:

SAA Chairman Award
Simonsig Estate

SAA Chief Executive Officer Award
Anura Vinyards and Rijk's Private Cellar

Best White Wine of the Year
Bellingham Maverick Chenin Blanc 2007

Best Red Wine of the Year
Thelema Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

Methode Cap Classique of the Year
Pongracz N/V

Port of the Year
Boplaas Cape Tawny Port N/V

SAA's annual wine selection is an anticipated event on the wine industry's calendar and is respected by local producers for the constructive feedback received from judges.

Each year a select team of local and international wine experts are invited to contribute their expertise to the selection process.

This year's judges were Tony Devitt of Australia, Andreas Seidl of Germany, Subhash Arora of India and Yegas Naidoo, Dave Hughes, Nomonde Khubeka, Carmen Stevens, Duimpie Bayly, Luvo Ntezo, Susan Wessels, Tariro Masayiti and Thato Goimane, all from South Africa.

The judging is a rigorous two-and-a-half-day process carefully monitored by independent auditors, Deloitte and Touche. The logistical process for the tasting is run by wine consultant, Bennie Howard.

Judges are divided into two panels and score the 750ml wines within their various categories using a 100-point system. The auditors compile the scores identifying the top scoring wines in each category, which go into the third days tasting.

On day three, all 750ml wines in the final round are tasted and scored and the auditors establish a final ranking per category.

The other categories of Port, Method Cap Classique and 187ml wines are tasted and scored on the same basis.
